Words To Cook By……let’s start with “A”

Words To Cook By……let’s start with “A”

For those of you who don’t know French, understanding what you are reading is essential prior to cooking up a savory dish. If you aren’t familiar with a particular word-don’t let that throw you off. Creating delicious dishes is relatively easy once you understand exactly what you’re reading. The following are explanations of some of the lesser recognizable words and cooking terms that you will find on Gourmandia.com.

  • Acacia-A shrub or spiny tree indigenous to several geographic locations-Australia, Italy, Jordan to name a few. Acacia is in the pea family. In the recipes found on Gourmandia.com, you will use sweet Acacia Honey-made from the nectar collected from the Acacia tree.
  • Aioli-Traditionally a French mayonnaise made with garlic, olive oil and egg.  There are many variations including aioli with mustard.
  • Alimentary-Pertains to providing nourishment.
  • Alsace-The region in northwestern France that is famous for its wine.
  • Amandine-Almond
  • Anchoiade-A dressing made from crushed anchovy fillets (very salty herring-like fish), garlic and olive oil.
  • Anise-An herb of the parsley family that possesses the flavor of licorice.
  • Antipasto-An Italian dish that is generally served with assorted meats, vegetables, fish and cheese as an appetizer.
  • Arabica-The beans produced from the Arabica coffee tree.
  • Armagnac-A dry French brandy distilled in the Armagnac region of southwest France.
  • Artichauts-The edible, Mediterranean plant known commonly as the artichoke.
  • Asperges-Asparagus.
  • Auberge- A small hotel or youth hostel.
  • Aux-At
  • Avec—With

Now that you have the first few pointers you will be able to tackle some of these recipes with no problem whatsoever. Check for future articles translating the remainder of the alphabet. To put these words to tasty use, visit Gourmandia.com. Happy Cuisson!

What would be very helpful is where we can find some of these ingredients, especially if they are not available in our local grocery store.

Hello Kim-
I agree, but the best advice I can give you is to put the name of the product or item that you want into a search engine. You will be able to buy it on-line. I realize that sometimes hard-to-find items are more expensive this way so your second choice is locating a specialty store or orgainc food market in your area-they seem to carry items like those mentioned in the article. Talk to you soon and check out the vents calendar for next Thursday evening.

I have recently been looking for different food & have found that even Krogers has much more than I thought. I just need to realize I’ve been looking in the wrong areas. We get stuck in our world is what I’ve noticed about myself. It’s time to reach out & explore what the world has to offer us.
