Winter Salads

Winter Salads

I know that winter isn’t exactly the time to be thinking about salads, greens, and other such leafy things but summer isn’t the only time to be doing the salad thing. So today I wanted to give you some tools to create your own winter salads from some things that I like to put together to make a salad. Some of them include hot elements, other include leftovers, the nice thing about salads is that you can just get creative!

Include a hot element

Its very cold outside these days and so a great way to spice up a salad is to include a hot element in the fixings. Some ideas? Beans, bacon, ham, sausage, steak, spicy chicken, even some melted cheese is a great option to create a hot element. Also, don’t forget that blanching your greens in hot water will warm them up a bit and give them a wilted look.

Use leftovers

Its the holidays this time of year, so don’t forget to include leftovers that you may have. I don’t know about you but we always seem to have piles of bowls with leftovers in them around my house. Turkey and ham make great toppings, dressings can be dried and turned into croutons, berries and pie fillings can make great toppings as well. If you made a huge salad for a family meal you can stretch that by keeping it covered in the fridge and adding on your new toppings and re-serving it over the week. Its also a great way to fill lunches.

Use a variety of Greens

Put down that iceberg and pick up some collard greens or raw spinach! Winter is a great time to experiment with other types of greens that you can use throughout the year!

Make Salads a meal

Add that hot meat element to your salad, add some pasta, even throwing in some crackers or sliced potatoes can take a salad from side dish to main event in just a few minutes.

Hopefully with these helpful tips you can enjoy salads all winter long.

Great posts Cameron! Excellent! Salad in winter? I’d never thought of doing it during the season, but now that you’ve given me ideas and great recipes, I will absolutely make this for my family
Thanks.
