They became more widespread during the 19th Century and the Industrial Revolution, as trains and other technology make the ingredient more accessible and less expensive to the rest of the population.
Cake, while delicious to eat, can be quite tricky to get just right, especially when it comes to getting it out of the pan and frosted. It is a delicate pastry and can crumble in a very easy fashion.
