Things You Didn’t Know You Could Grill
Probably most of us have eaten grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken breasts, steaks, and maybe fish – but as the grilling season is coming upon us, why not try grilling some more unexpected foods?
More Meats to Grill
Grilling is a scrumptious way to cook almost any meat, so don’t limit yourself to hamburgers! For example, Grilled Chuck Roast is one of my family’s favorites. You can follow the recipe here, or merely use it as a grilling guide and season the meat how you prefer. Even a simple, heavy dose of store bought steak seasoning works well.
You can also grill a Whole Chicken; again, you can season it just about any way you like. Getting it grilled well is a matter of technique, which you can read about in the recipe. Try Grilled Whole Duck and Grilled Foie Gras, too.
For bacon lovers, grilling bacon is a must. Use slab bacon cut into chunks; cook over indirect heat.
When it comes to seafood, almost anything can be grilled, too. Try Grilled Shrimp, for example, or Clams on the Grill; the latter is considered the only way to eat clams by many connoisseurs. You can also grill lobsters and mussels in their shells over medium-high heat.
Fantastic Grilled Fruits & Veggies
Many of us have tried grilled corn or potatoes, but truly, almost all vegetables can be grilled. Asparagus is one of the trickier vegetables to grill, but here are some great directions for delicious Grilled Asparagus with Ham. Other terrific vegetables to try include Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Onions, Grilled Romaine Hearts, and Grilled Tomatoes.
Fruits are even more rarely grilled, but are definitely an interesting addition to any Grill Master’s repertoire. Try Grilled Apples, Grilled Bananas, Fresh Fruit Kebabs, and Salsa made with Grilled Peaches. You can also grill avocados for a tasty addition to burgers. Halve the fruit and remove the pit. Brush lightly with oil and place over medium heat. Watermelon, pineapple, and mangos are also good choices; just brush with oil and put over medium-high heat.
Other Great Grilling Ideas
Try grilling cheese – yes, cheese! Use thick slices of provolone, for example, lightly oiled and placed over medium-high heat; let it get a bit gooey, but don’t let it start dripping.
Nuts are fair game, too. Place them on a sheet of foil over medium heat. Even eggs are grill worthy. Place a whole egg (in the shell) over medium heat for about 15 minutes; they will be hard cooked. You may also place them (without the shell) in a muffin tin lightly sprayed with oil over medium heat until cooked to your taste.
