Preserving Summer’s Berries

Preserving Summer’s Berries
admin 27 Comments Tags: berries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries

If you’re like me, one of your favorite things about summer is berries. Whether you forage for wild berries, harvest them at a pick-your-own farm, or buy them from a farmer’s market or the grocery store, summer is definitely the time to indulge in sweet, nutrient-packed berries. But if you want to preserve those delicious berries for winter, it’s easy to do. You don’t have to know how to can, and no previous experience with any type of food preservation is needed.

Freezing Berries

The easiest method of preserving berries for winter is to freeze them.

1. Gently wash the berries. Do not soak; instead, place them in a colander and run water over them. Drip dry.

2. Once dry, place the berries in a single layer on a baking sheet. Pop the baking sheet in the freezer.

3. When the berries feel hard, place them in freezer bags. Berries will keep for up to a year in the freezer.

Frozen berries are perfect for desserts. I toss them (still frozen) with whatever ingredients are called for in a fresh-berry recipe and bake. I rarely need to add to the baking time.

Another idea is to take a handful of berries out of the freezer in the evening and let them thaw; in the morning, sprinkle them over cereal or yogurt.

Dehydrating Berries

Another easy way to preserve berries is to dry them. The easiest way to do this and ensure high quality is to use a home food dehydrator. (And inexpensive one works just fine as long as it has an adjustable temperature control and a good fan.)

1. Wash the berries, as outlined above.

2. Place the berries in a single layer on a tray and dehydrate at 135 degrees F. until completely dry. To test for doneness, pinch a berry. No sign of moisture should appear.

If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can use the warming drawer of an oven, at its lowest temperature setting, or even the oven itself, also at its lowest temperature setting. Begin by placing a wire cooling rack over a baking tray. Place a sheet of parchment paper over the wire rack, then top with a single layer of berries.

Store dried berries in a glass jar with a metal lid in a cool, dry, dark location. Dried berries may be eaten as is, or you may soak them in water for up to 30 minutes before using as you would fresh berries.

I believe such tips are common and I didn’t see any unique content on your blog. There are a lot of tips over the internet and the tips that you’ve shared are common ones: no offense. Thank you for your efforts.

Berries are one of my favorites .. I always bought them in stores .. I haven’t really tried preserving them. Would the nutrients of berries and its taste would be the same if I’m going to preserve them? If so, what would be the best way to make it? Refrigerating or dehydration?

For preserving berries I’m using the mild vinegar solution, I would definitely dry the berries as thoroughly as possible before refrigerating them. The reason for this, is that in using regular white vinegar it doesn’t have a pronounced taste.

I really love berries ever since. Actually I always told my mom to buy berries whenever she’s going to the market. It was great that I saw this posted article that berries can be dehydrated. This one is quite new to me. I already tried preserving berries and it end up with good result. Now I will try the dehydrating of berries, too!

This would be more interesting to me. Preserving berries? Well, I think dehydrating is easier than freezing it… I don’t like wet on my plate or hands. But it’s a very nice idea. Keep it up… I’m going to bookmark this article. I am going to made mine with free hedgerow blackberries and elderberries. Yummy!

I keep berries unwashed in paper towel lined containers without lids in the refrigerator. As long as they stay dry, they last just fine.

Berries can really be a pain if not disposed correctly. They can stink a lot don’t you agree? That’s why this blog is really helpful not only in preserving food and also in taking good care of your family’s nutritional needs.

I love collecting berries during summer when I was a little boy. But when I grew up, I forgot my hobby because of lot of paper works on my desk. What I like on this blog, is that, it flashback me the times when me and my sister were collecting berries, such a good time! Well, i wanted to try it one more time even both of us have children, it can be our bonding moments with our children. I do really like this post.

Usually, I don’t like the taste of preserved berries. But when I did the instructions here, it makes me really amazed because for the first time preserved berries suit my taste. Now that I’m done with preserving them, I will also try to dehydrate them. I’m sure it will end up also with a good result.

I’m always craving for berries, especially on winter when there’s nothing to do, and berries are my snack when I’m watching TV. Yippee! Now I can preserve my own berries for winter and the great thing is the procedure — it is so easy as pie!

Freezing berries? I didn’t know I can preserved something in just freezing… because everything can be ruined when I’m doing it, these ways can be very helpful to me. I hope you can post more articles about preserving food. Nice blog!

Food has intrinsic value, and preserving in little ways can be good practice for the future. It’s very helpful that we preserved food for emergencies. These idea of freezing and drying is awesome.

Hey, there is a lot to learn from this blog. Actually, there are things in here that I don’t see every time. I have question about dehydrating berries, when dehydrating berries does the juice will use or as is that was dehydrate? In addition, is the taste of the berries will still be the same or it lessens the taste? Too many questions asked. However, I wanted to make jam on dehydrating berries if that is possible.

Blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, blueberries, and strawberries — I love them all .. But I can’t find one during winter even on market near our place. Nice post! Now, I can buy or pick one during summer to save them and during winter to munch with.

We usually do this when time of summer and we picked berries as many as we can. Preserving berries is good for us, it has many uses and purposes. It is nice to know that there are blogs that feature this. I really enjoy reading this blog; it reminds me to start preserving berries this time.

The freezing works for me! I prefer that than the dried one. I love berries that I can add to my shakes or make juice out of them. So nice to have these tips on handy. Thanks for the post.

We also have many, many raspberries to freeze. This is how we do it. Since we make a point of picking with clean hands, we do not wash our organic, unsprayed raspberries. They are too soft for that anyhow, being an old fashioned variety rather than a commercial one.

We use a similar method when we get extra raspberries to freeze. This summer we were so excited to find raspberry bushes in our backyard months after we moved into the house. We’ve only gotten 2 qtrs. so far this summer, but it was exciting nonetheless!
