Cranberry Oat Scones

Allison Armstrong 4 Comments Tags: baked goods, baking, cranberries, cranberry recipes, cranberry scones, English recipes, oatmeal scones, oats, quick breads, scone recipes, scones, Scottish recipes, tea, traditional, whole wheat, yoghurt

This scone isn’t a light-and-flaky pastry. In addition to upping the “healthy” factor of the dessert (it’s not an oxymoron! Seriously!), the rolled oats, whole wheat flour and yoghurt give these scones a consistency that is closer to brownies than to pie-crust. They’re just the thing to nibble on while curled up on the couch with hot tea and a good book.

Savoury Potato Kugel

Now some of you are surely already familiar with this term but I had no idea what “kugel” was other than “something with noodles”. As it turns out, kugel is a traditional Jewish dessert or side-dish – like a sweet quiche or a strata – typically made with potatoes or noodles as well as eggs, milk and cottage cheese or, sometimes, sour cream.

.

The kugel I made is a savoury dish – less popular that its sweeter cousin, but still delicious. Here’s my recipe.

Cookies for the Winter Queen

I had been wanting to post this recipe on Winter Solstice proper (I’m a big ol’ Pagan) since it’s one of my (now) annual solstice desserts and quite the favourite of my party guests. An acquaintance of mine – fantastical author Seanan McGuire – lives in California, where pomegranates grow locally, and she makes chocolate-pomegranate cookies every year to celebrate the season. Being the improvisational little squirrel that I am, promptly mucked about with her recipe and worked out a version of my own that involved (a) adding more chocolate and (b) making it gluten-free.

Not Just Any Potato Soup

Allison Armstrong 0 Comments Tags: cauliflower, celeriac, cellery, cellery root, hearty soup, neeps and tatties, potato soup, potatoes, seasonal recipes, shiitake mushrooms, soup, veg*n recipes, vegan recipes, vegetarian recipe, white beans, winter recipes

In addition to plans for adding it to my up-coming Solstice feast, I thought that Celeriac would lend a little extra complexity to a traditional leek and potato soup. Of course, my potato soup isn’t entirely traditional. In addition to the celeriac, I’ve also included white beans, cauliflower, and a pinch of cayenne, to make a sturdy, stick-to-your-ribs meal that’s perfect for December’s blessedly (cursedly?) cold winter days.

Winter Black Bean and Quinoa Pilaf

So the lovely folks at Gourmandia have asked me to write a post about Health Food. This is both a breeze and a tall order. It’s a tall order because there are so many ways to interpret the phrase “health food” – everything from allergen-aware cooking to raw food diets, from organic and free-range animals and produce to unprocessed whole foods. There’s such a broad spectrum of definitions to work with, not to mention the challenge of dealing with health food related stereotypes like “health food is bland and tasteless” or “health food proponents are preachy and self-righteous”. It’s a breeze, though, because eating “health food” really just means eating the food that’s best for your body.

I’m a food nut from Ottawa, Canada whose approach to cooking tries to be seasonal and tends to be intuitive and very DIY. Below you’ll find my recipe for a winter-vegetable stuffed tenderloin roast.
